Thom Lambert, a resident of Franklin County, Pennsylvania, describes their family’s rescue dog as a “goofball” who loves sleeping whenever he’s not out and about, wandering through their neighborhood checking in on his canine buddies.
When Thom adopted the dog, a coonhound named Edgar, from a shelter in West Virginia, he never imagined the canine would be saving his family as well.
The Lamberts will forever be grateful to Edgar for stopping a would-be kidnapper in his tracks.
One night, Edgar’s loud barking and growling woke Thom from a deep sleep. As this was unusual for the coonhound, Thom went downstairs to see what the matter was.
After he convinced Edgar to stop making a racket, he heard footsteps—the sound of somebody hurrying down the stairs. That’s when he realized an intruder was in his home.
He rushed upstairs, giving his wife a knife and telling her to lock their daughters in the room with her. Afterward, he called the police and then went from room to room, looking for the intruder.
The trespasser had escaped by then, but the police found out that he had entered through the Lamberts’ kitchen window.
The next day, authorities arrested a man called Thomas Dewald for kidnapping a four-year-old girl from her house just down the street from the Lamberts.
Following his arrest, Dewald admitted that he had broken into another house in the area, intending to kidnap one of the family’s young daughters.
Thom’s blood ran cold upon hearing how close they had come to danger that night. The authorities informed him that their coonhound’s growling scared Dewald off, forcing him to flee.
Dewald is facing several charges that include burglary, unlawful restraint, and kidnapping, and he’s being held in prison without bail. Meanwhile, the Lamberts’ neighbors are praising Edgar’s bravery and rewarding him with treats and even a big, juicy steak.
