Life in the streets is extremely tough for a dog. Not only do they have to endure long days without food, but they also have to contend with other dogs. They also don’t have a place to stay where they can be protected from severely hot or cold weather.
Scared of humans
This is how life was for Zuzi in the streets of Romania. The stray dog frequently stayed in the large compound of a private company. She would go around and look for something to eat or would seek shelter in some of their fixed benches.
Some of the employees were kind to her and would give her their leftovers. Some, though, were not as nice and would try to kick her out of the property. This confused the dog and made her scared of humans. So every time a person tries to get close to her, even if they had no bad intentions, she would run away or bark defensively.
When they realized that the dog needed help bad, they decided to call Howl Of A Dog, a local non-profit dog rescue organization. When the rescue team finally arrived at the property, Zuzi did what she usually does, run away. The rescuers were told that animal control once tried to catch the stray, but they just ended up hurting her with a catchpole.
Sensing that she would be traumatized with the catchpole and would associate it with pain, they decided not to use one. Instead, with the professional assistance of a vet, they used tranquilizers instead. And once Zuzi calmed down, they were able to go near her and even pet her head. When they first tried that, Zuzi tried to bite one of the rescuer’s hands.
A new life
After a visit to a vet, where they treated her for some wounds, Zuzi was brought to a foster home. There they surrounded her with people that love her. In time she learned how to trust humans again. Zuzi has become more active and sociable and is now looking for her forever home.
