Sometimes Victoria Stilwell encounter owners who are very considerate towards their pet. In these cases, she can focus more on training the dog rather than addressing owner issues. Heidi and Brigette have a dog named Pumpkin, who is afraid of wooden floors.
The owners are not sure why Pumpkin is afraid of wooden floors. The small dog refuses to climb up the stairs despite being coaxed with food. Victoria thinks Pumpkin might have a bad experience in the past with wooden floors.
It was very uncomfortable to watch how Pumpkin behaved when she was on wooden floors. She was shaking and made no attempt to move. She only moved when a pillow was placed next to her.
Victoria began training Pumpkin using a separate stair with only four steps. The steps are covered in carpet, and the trainer used treats to get Pumpkin to go on the steps. The process was slow because the trainer didn’t want to force Pumpkin.
Eventually, Pumpkin was able to climb up all four steps. Then, Victoria removed the carpets to expose the wooden steps. Pumpkin din not like it.
Victoria took some strips of carpet and put it back on the stairs. This time only a portion of wood was exposed for each step. Pumpkin was able to climb the steps again.
After that, Victoria addressed Pumpkin’s fear of the wooden floors. She placed mats spaced out across the floor. This was a way for Pumpkin to move across the floor without worry. Once she got more comfortable, the mats are removed one by one.
When Victoria left, there was a slight tension between the owners. Heidi was very controlling of the way Bridgette trained the dog. Despite the friction, Pumpkin was making a lot of progress.
When Victoria came back, she worked on training Pumpkin on the actual stairs of the house. It took a while for her to muster the courage. When Pumpkin finally managed to climb up the wooden stairs, everyone was cheering.
